About the Website Creators

Exploris students

This website was created as a service learning project by Exploris Middle School students. Exploris Middle School (EMS) is a small charter school located in downtown Raleigh just a few miles from Walnut Creek. EMS focuses on global issues and educates students in unique ways, including weekly service projects. One of the on-going projects has focused on the Walnut Creek wetlands. Service Learning is an important part of our school time every Friday because giving back to the community is part of being a contributing citizen of Raleigh, and EMS students.

Describing species

The 2008-2009 school year has been the third year that Exploris eighth graders have participated in the Walnut Creek Service Learning project. This year, every Friday, 32 students participated in activities such as trash cleanups, wildlife observation, and water testing while working to create this website. Last year’s eighth graders created a field guide to the Walnut Creek wetlands (see online at http://www.learnnc.org/lp/multimedia/9876) describing examples of animal species that can be found in the wetlands. During that project, EMS students looked for animals, explored the creek, caught fish in harmless traps, and learned how to draw nature sketches. The previous year, students created an oral history of the wetlands. You can hear interviews of people who grew up in the area at http://www.soil.ncsu.edu/feature/wc_oral_history/.

In 2008-2009, EMS eighth graders have created this educational website as a service to the wider Raleigh community. We hope that this website will help others care about the environment and protect wildlife by educating them about the value of an urban wetland. Also, we hope that students and citizens of Raleigh will continue to add to this website in the coming years. If you are interested in adding to this website please contact the director of the Walnut Creek Wetland Center.
