Key Field Marks:
- Small woodpecker with black and white plumage and small red patch on back of head

- Pointy bill, long compared to head size
Key Behaviors:
- Nests in tree snags or dead branches
- Eats insects and other arthropods, fruits, seeds
- Chicks fledge in 18-21 days
- Clutch Size 3-8 eggs

- Found from Alaska to Florida
- Open deciduous woodlands
- Urban backyards
