Seasons in Walnut Creek: Year–round resident
Key Field Marks:
- Dense brown coat with white spot on chin and chest
- Weighs 1.5 to 3.5 pounds
- Flat skull with small ears
- Member of weasel family
- Long slender body
Key Behaviors:
- Nocturnal and swims well
- Eats fish, frogs, muskrat, snakes, and waterfowl
- Male minks avoid contact at all times except for in the spring
Habit and Range:
- Found near water
- Scat is clumpy in the middle and is tapered at the ends
- Mink fore footprint has nails at end; hind print looks like fore print only bigger with five toes, grouped in 1-3-1 pattern
Walnut Creek Sighting: Found dead on road along State Street in winter of 2007 by Dr. Norman Camp.
