Seasons in Walnut Creek: Year-round resident
Key Field Marks:
- Weighs 7-20 pounds
- Black "mask" around eyes and dark rings encircling tail
- Each foot has five fingers and toes
Key Behaviors:
- Dens in hollow trees, there may be scratched or torn bark around den
- Litters contain 1-8 young, usually born in April
- When territory is threatened raccoons growl, lower heads, bare teeth, and flatten ears
Habit and Range:
- Look for tracks along wooded streams and wetland habitats
- Cities, suburbs, and rural areas
- Only native to the Americas
- Look for small, cylindrical scat
